Paper quality and print quality- Yes, there’s a way to do both
It doesn’t take long to find out what can go wrong with paper and print quality. This is one of the more infuriating parts of printing, and it’s avoidable. There are some simple things you can do to make sure you don’t have printing problems. You can also get good quality Ink Cartridges online which will help get rid of print issues.
Paper- What you need and what you don’t need
There are basic categories of paper which are useful benchmarks for figuring out what you need:
- Photo quality paper- Good for accurate printing, but not always what’s required for some types of printing, particularly graphics, and not used in some types of hard copy.
- Fine quality card- Extremely reliable, but needs to be handled properly in the Printer. It’s advisable to do a test with one sheet, to make sure you’re getting proper rendering.
- Handmade paper- There are many different types of this very beautiful paper, and many different results from printing. The soft, highly absorbent papers can be a problem with some print jobs, particularly on low gsm paper which can be too thin. Some handmade papers are fitted with “size” (glues) or waxy blends which are generally reliable, and in some cases better than Photo Paper.
- Typing paper- Not suitable for complex professional print work, they’re OK for basic graphics and simple colour layouts.
- Pulp- Generally risky, because the pulp papers tend to be soft and low quality. They can also jam printers pretty easily, and should be used one sheet at a time. Print quality can be debatable, even with laser printers.
- Fine paper- This is the professional industry standard printing paper, (some printer manufacturers make their own) and it’s trustworthy for all pro graphics jobs unless you need another medium.
Print quality- basic precautions
When working with a new type of paper:
- Run single sheets only. You need to be sure you’re getting the right results, and some types of paper are slippery and will clog the printer with multiple sheets.
- Do a thorough check of the first print. If there are any issues like ink run, or spots, this is where to find them before they cause any problems.
- Compare with the original. Some types of paper affect rendition, and others create absorption issues.
Test your settings
Before an important print, it’s advisable to test nozzles on your printer. Use your best quality print settings on test print runs, to see how the paper’s behaving. You can use the adjusted settings as a benchmark for different types of paper.
Good prints every time
When you’ve familiarized yourself with the printing settings, you’ll have a reliable, efficient printing process that will save a lot of time, patience and paper. If you’re doing a lot of specialized printing, it’s a good idea to stock up on bulk ink or toner cartridges. Check out the online suppliers, and save some money while you’re working.
